General Bluetooth Connection Step-by-Step

The typical process that is used to connect field eqiupment ([robotic] total stations, GNSS Base receivers, GNSS Rover receivers, etc) to the data collector (controller) through a wireless Bluetooth® connection involves these main steps:

  1. Power on the field equipment so it has adequate time to complete its startup procedure. It is recommended that the controller and field equipment be within 10 meters (approximately 30 feet) of one another during the discovery/pairing process.
  2. Prior to starting SurvPC, make sure the controller's Bluetooth device is active. Refer to Turn Bluetooth on or off in Windows and also confirm the operating system of the controller.
  3. Start SurvPC and once in a SurvPC job, access the Equip tab and select the equipment option (Total Station, GPS Base, GPS Rover, GPS Raw Only or Peripherals) you wish to use in the field.
  4. On the Current tab, select the desired Manufacturer and Model of the field equipment.
  5. Access the Comms tab and set Type to Bluetooth:

  6. Set the BT Type to Windows Mobile.
  7. Tap the Wrenches button to expose the Bluetooth device dialog box.
  8. Tap the Find Device button. The operating system should attempt to initiate the discovery of available Bluetooth devices.

Note: In locations with numerous Bluetooth devices present, the searching for the desired device might take longer than normal and/or require multiple searches.

  9. Select the found device and tap the Bluetooth Connect button found to the left of ❌.
  10. The paired and connected Bluetooth device should now be a part of the equipment list.

Note: Some brands of equipment might come pre-configured with a Bluetooth PIN. Below are some common PIN values for reference purposes.

Note: When connected, the blue 'i' button found on the Current tab will show additional information related to the equipment (e.g. applied firmware, IMEI, ISDN, etc), when available.
